Determination of the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA)

print

When carrying out PHAs, the need to introduce Safety Instrumented Functions may arise, requiring their integration into a Safety Instrumented System with a specified Safety Integrity Level (SIL).

Why should a SIL assessment be carried out?

Calculation of the SIL applicable in the design and assessment of a SIS provides a final layer of protection to ensure that any risks which cannot be dealt with by traditional control methods are dealt with.

When should a SIL assessment be carried out?

Whenever the following are required:

  • Improved safety in installations.
  • Verification of the safety levels provided by different layers of protection.
  • A reduction in the financial losses suffered as a result of material damage costs, loss of profits, or civil liability costs arising from accidents.
